If you live in New York State and enjoy gambling, chances are you have wondered whether online casinos are legal there. Despite New York’s stringent laws against gambling, online gaming hasn’t been completely banned; rather there are several safe and fun casino options available to residents including social casinos and sweepstakes casinos that provide real-money alternatives that provide safe entertainment opportunities.

New York lawmakers are making strides towards legal iGaming. Senator Joseph Addabbo introduced S4856 in 2024 that would create legal iGaming in New York by creating license processes for operators as well as taxing online gaming at 30.5%; significantly less than what New Jersey applies for slots games (54%).

Addabbo’s bill has won some support in the Senate, but still needs to pass through Assembly and be signed by Governor Wolf. A major hurdle lies with casino workers’ union who oppose it as they believe iGaming could undermine jobs within the industry; therefore if lawmakers wish for passage by 2024 they must negotiate some sort of compromise agreement between labor group and lawmakers in order to get this legislation passed.

One major hurdle facing New York iGaming sites operating within its borders could be New York State’s stringent anti-money laundering rules, which apply to any casino accepting gambling money from gamblers in New York State. To prevent any potential issues with licensing from the New York State Gaming Commission and conducting stringent compliance checks.

New Yorkers have not been stopped from gambling online in the interim. New York’s legal sportsbooks, launched on January 8th 2022 and available through FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, and Caesars sports betting services respectively have proven highly popular since generating $1.6 billion in wagers and $57.2 million in revenue within just their first month of operations!

Though legalizing iGaming in New York will likely present its own set of challenges, lawmakers appear optimistic about passing a bill this year. Polls show strong support among the general population for online casino games being legalized in this state. If this legislation passes this legislative session successfully, lawmakers would then work with labor unions and governor to implement it across New York; should this occur it could provide much-needed revenue boost and job creation benefits.
